Saving The Reef
Belize is home to the second largest barrier Reef in the world.
Eradicating LionFish
Belize waters is home to an invasive species known as the lionfish. Within these waters, the red lionfish and the common lionfish are the two most sighted species found. These invasive lionfish have the ability to release a staggering number of eggs, up to 15,000. They primarily prey on small fish, invertebrates, and mollusks, with up to six different species of prey being discovered in their stomachs. Unfortunately, lionfish are skilled hunters, which puts the local species at a significant disadvantage. Adding to the problem is the fact that lionfish have no natural predators in the waters of Belize.
ABOUT THE REEF
The Belize Barrier Reef is home to a large diversity of plants and animals:

-
70 hard coral species
-
36 soft coral species
-
500 species of fish
-
hundreds of invertebrate species

Lionfish have decreased the reef's population by 90%
HUNTING THE LION
Lionfish have a voracious appetite and can devour fish that are almost half their size, posing a significant threat to the marine ecosystem. With no natural enemies to keep their population in check, they can decimate up to 90% of a coral reef. To combat this issue, hunting, fishing, and trapping have proven to be highly effective methods in controlling the rapid growth of lionfish
SAFE HANDLING
It is crucial to have proper knowledge of first aid for lionfish stings and to handle and dispose of them safely to ensure the well-being of both humans and the environment. Despite their venomous spines, lionfish are safe to eat and can be enjoyed raw or cooked. Moreover, their meat is said to be delicious, light, white, and flaky. Lionfish are surprisingly rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids compared to many common table-fish, and they contain low levels of heavy metals such as mercury and lead. Enjoy!
Please Donate
Your donations play a crucial role in the fight against the invasive lionfish species that threaten our oceans. With your support, we can continue to provide the necessary resources to hunt and eradicate these harmful creatures. Your contribution helps us pay for the equipment, gas, resources, education, and tools needed to safely effectively remove lionfish from our waters. By donating, you are helping to protect our oceans and preserve the delicate of our marine ecosystems. Thank you for your support.
